The most recent fighting follow intense border hostilities over the weekend, when the Taliban claimed to have eliminated 58 members of the Pakistani military and Pakistan said it killed 200 "Taliban and affiliated terrorists". The reported casualty figures provided by each side could not be confirmed by external sources.

A few days of fragile peace that had lasted since the weekend were broken on Wednesday.

Videos purportedly of the fighting and its aftereffects have been circulated online and on social channels, including images claiming to be of those deceased and blurry shots from night vision cameras claiming to be of check posts demolished. These videos have not been authenticated.

A informant in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan stated that fighting erupted at around 04:00 local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on the previous day). Another local in Spin Boldak, who lives about one kilometre away from the border crossing, reported that "very heavy hostilities persisted for almost several hours".

"We observed drones and fighter planes flying over us, some of our family members are wounded," they said.

A medical professional in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak stated that he tallied "7 fatalities and thirty-six injured brought to the hospital", including men, women and children.

The circumstances were "strained" and more casualties were being transferred to medical care, he said.

Displacement and Global Responses

A regional Taliban official in Spin Boldak stated that "hundreds of households have been forced to flee since the previous evening due to the intense fighting". He mentioned they were on "maximum readiness" after a several Taliban posts were targeted by Pakistani jets. He further indicated that they had the bodies of two armed forces members.

In a distinct overnight clash on the western border, the Islamabad's forces said that 25 to 30 militant and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "suspected" to have been eliminated.

The clashes have led to appeals for reduced tensions from foreign nations including Beijing and Moscow, as well as a proposal from the American leader that he could intervene to broker peace.

On that day, a UN official, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by reports of civilian casualties and displacement because of the clashes.

"I urge all parties to exercise the utmost caution, safeguard non-combatants, and abide by international law," he wrote.

Historical Disputes

Islamabad has for years accused the Taliban authorities of allowing the Pakistani militants to function from their territory and fight against the Islamabad government in an effort to impose a strict religion-based system of governance.

The Afghan Taliban government has always rejected this.
