Surprise as Government Supporters Purchase the Nation's Most-Read Newspaper

Media professionals at the country's most-read publication have expressed shock after a media group viewed as friendly to nationalist prime minister Viktor Orbán's political faction, Fidesz, purchased the tabloid from its previous Swiss owners.

Timing of Purchase

The buyout, which comes as Hungary approaches important elections next year, is largely considered another move to expand government influence on the media.

A Fidesz-friendly media group, Indamedia, stated on Friday it had acquired a collection of Hungarian media assets, including the fashion publication and Blikk, a popular tabloid whose news site reaches about three million web users monthly.

Leadership Shake-up

Blikk's outgoing top editor, Ivan Zolt Nagy, announced on Monday that he and another key leader were leaving in "common understanding" with the acquiring company.

They had been hired seven months ago to revamp Blikk, "focusing not on sensationalism but on engaging content" and to be "more audience-focused, covering politics, economics, and culture," he said on Facebook.

Employee Reactions

Workers from Blikk expressed being taken aback. "I nearly experienced a cardiac episode when I heard the news," stated one journalist, who requested to remain unidentified. "Personally, this is professionally concerning."

Blikk has introduced a replacement top editor, Baláz Kolossváry.

Press Environment Concerns

Several media professionals who have decided to stay acknowledge feeling in a challenging situation as there are few other media organizations available where they could apply.

Over the past 15 years, Orbán has been able to use a widespread pro-government media landscape to strengthen his public perception and polls.

Political Timing

Whereas significant press deals have typically occurred either following voting or during a stable political time, the acquisition of Ringier Hungary comes less than six months before April's parliamentary election.

Blikk was considered a key objective for Orbán and his political organization at a period when surveys are indicating that they have a real challenger for the premier instance in over a decade.

Political Rival Reaction

The opposition leader, Péter Magyar, whose Tisza political group is running on commitments to eradicate entrenched dishonesty, has been vocal about Orbán's "information apparatus" and the damage he asserts it has affected Hungary's democracy.

He has questioned the Ringier Hungary acquisition, saying it constitutes another move by Orbán to solidify his influence over Hungary's media outlets.

Newspaper's Significance

Though Blikk is a popular newspaper, known for its celebrity news and sensational captions, in the last several years it has also published multiple stories on alleged corruption.

"Blikk is by far the most popular newspaper in Hungary, a market leader," commented a press expert. "Their digital platform has become surprisingly popular in recent years, becoming the fourth most popular digital platform in Hungary. If partisan content appears in such highly popular and influential publications, it will have an impact on the citizenry."

Global Perspective

For exceeding a ten-year period, Hungary has acted as a example for other "illiberal democracies" internationally.

Ex-US administrators and their associates have long praised Orbán's Hungary even as it declines in press freedom rankings.

In 2022, Orbán addressed a meeting of US traditionalist groups that the path to power required "controlling media outlets."

Past Media Regulation

In 2010, Orbán's regime passed a legislation that asserted state authority over the chief communications authority and positioned the national media outlet in the hands of loyalists.

Proprietorship Details

Indamedia is 50% owned by Mikló Vaszily, a state-aligned investor who is also top executive of a government-friendly television station.

In a statement, Indamedia's additional partner and CEO, Gábor Ziegler, commented: "Through the acquisition of Ringier Hungary, the group is gaining a well-performing publication group of equivalent magnitude to Indamedia, with solid commercial standing and successful brands that serve a crucial function in the Hungarian communications sector."

Ringier said in a statement that its choice to divest was "based solely on commercial planning elements and our emphasis on our primary online operations in Hungary."

A official representative was contacted for statement.
