The UK authorities has added eleven more nations to its public warning roster about the dangers of methanol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

This revised travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a global increase in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Only recently, the government had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to a number of serious events such as the tragic loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that even small amounts of methanol can result in permanent eye damage or loss of life within 12 to 48 hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a harmful substance commonly utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not designed for ingestion.

Although it is generated during the creation of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the purification method.

However in some countries, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to notice.
